Why is 1.618 (The Golden Ratio) so important?
As a mysterious proportion found throughout many facets of the natural world, from micro to macro, it is fair to say that The Golden Ratio has inspired thinkers of all disciplines like no other number in the history of mathematics. Put simply, The Golden Ratio is a mathematical constant that appears repeatedly in nature, such as the elegant spiral of ferns, snails, pinecones and The Milky Way Galaxy's spiralled arms, to the geometric helix of our own DNA all representing the same mathematical proportions. Many creators of ancient architecture, artwork and modern design have emulated these proportions to show balance, precision, efficiency and time tested success. Intriguingly, many studies have shown that humans are more attracted to design that nears this 'Divine' or Golden Ratio, which has a proportion of 1 to 1.618. For example, most standard sized business cards are exactly this proportion.
